Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan

Lake Superior- Big Bay- Need quick response please... Thanks!

Hey Wind-friends,

In 4 days, I am moving up to the UP from SE MI for about 2 months and I will be right by Big Bay on Lake Superior... I am taking my 12'6" windSUP with me.... Does anyone know what the conditions are like there? Wind, water temperature? Is it worth taking my smaller boards (111 freerace and 94 FSW) and some sails? I was thinking maybe I'd just take my 5.5 to play on the WindSUP in addition to some paddle boarding.

Thanks,

Hazim

Hi Hazim,

I met you at Empire Beach last summer - light wind day you were on your SUP doing freestyle.

From my recollections of sailing in the UP, I spent time up there in the early 2000s.

Definitely  bring all your gear, when I was there I sailed quite a bit in the Keweenaw Peninsula on L. Superior mainly 5.5 gear and 100 liter board, nice Big Lake conditions.

I was there on a particularly warm summer L. Superior was easily sailed on with just a summer long wetsuit.

I do believe it's windier up the in the summer then it is downstate.

Have fun and keep us posted.

Tom

Great- thanks Tom. I'll see what I can manage to bring up...

Hazim,

Like Tom, I've sailed over near Houghton.  The water is cold, so bring some thick rubber.  In August it will be better, but you'll still need a wet suit.

If you can, definitely take your smaller boards.  I know there are some guys in this forum who sail up there.  Hopefully you can connect with some of them.

Hazim:

I live in Traverse City, but am from Houghton, and agree with Tom's and Brian's comments - I strongly recommend bringing smaller gear. I've not sailed Big Bay, but the predominant south to southwest winds would be pushing offshore, although, when it does come from the north, it's often very good wind. Lake Superior has been warmer than normal the past few years, but that's speaking relatively, plus, it's been a cold spring, so bring the heavy neoprene, including a hood.

For some photos from the Keweenaw Peninsula (Houghton area), see

and the 2012, 2010, and 2009 galleries.

It's beautiful country; enjoy your time there.

Dave

I wasn't expecting anything less than beautiful scenery and cold water :)... It'll be fun! Thank you guys!
