Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan
Well, I am not new to the area yet...
I just got a job offer from MSU. I want to know how that will affect my windsurfing life, if I accept it.
I'd hate to drag my gear 1000 miles from Long Island, NY - only to have it gather dust.
I am encouraged by the community I see here on this site. We have a tight, feisty group here on LI, and I think that social aspect is part of what makes windsurfing so great.
Anything that anyone can share would be great.

Larry,
There's Lake Lansing, near MSU where there are a few 'feisty' windsurfers. You'd probably be 1.5-2 hrs from a few good places on Lake Michigan as well. Bring your gear - it will only gather dust during the winter. Our water changes phase in the winter.
Here's some stuff to do during the winter: http://www.michigan.org/winter/

Certainly bring the gear. Rent a place near Lake Lansing.
you'll be 1.5hrs from Lk. Michigan, Lk Erie, and 2 hours Lk. Huron. and Lk St. Claire.
Bring your freeskate and continue to sail through the winter and on the ice!

On the other hand, if you don't have anything larger than a 5.5, you won't sail that often.
Good point, Scott. I should have indicated something about my expectations.
I'll do that in the form of describing my current gear - a quiver of wave sails from
4.0 to 6.3, a 100 liter freestyle board and a 80 liter wave board. My most used
combo is the 6.3/100l, followed by 5.6/100l. I own and use a dry suit, so I am
not afraid of cold temperatures. Most of my sailing is in the flat water of Long Island's
Great South Bay - which is within walking distance of my house, but I also sail
the Long Island Sound and the Ocean when conditions are right - both
of which are 45 minutes drive. I do travel to sail a bit as well - mostly Hatteras
and the Caribbean. The only freshwater sailing I have done is the Columbia River.
Thanks again for any feedback.
