Hi Daneen,
Welcome to MI Windsurfing.
Depending on where your son sails, and exactly how much experience he has might change the recommendations. As a rule for beginners, stay away from old, narrow boards. Modern wider boards are much easier to learn on and will make for a much more positive experience. At 155 lbs, I wouldn't suggest a sail much bigger than 5.5 or 6m2 to learn on. As he gains experience, he'll need more than one sail.
