Those of you who make the annual pilgrimage to Hatteras probably know Andy McKinney at Wind NC. Andy is having very serious health problems and I'm guessing that he and his family could probably use a hand. If you're thinking about new gear, or even just parts, consider getting that gear at Wind NC. Maybe even get something that you don't need! https://shop.wind-nc.com/

I might write a follow up about each if there’s something interesting to say about these trips. Thanks to those who offered nice comments on my last post about windsurfing + camping in Empire.

Trip 1 Pelee Island: 9/13/2019 thru 9/15/2019

Update: See my session post for more info on how it went down...

Last year about this time, my wife and I took our boat to Pelee Island for a weekend. We keep a 22’ Nautica Deluxe docked at my childhood home in Grosse Ile, which is located where the Detroit River meets Lake Erie. My plan this year is basically to repeat the voyage, but to also bring along a windsurfer!

My boat is a rigid-hull inflatable boat (RIB). RIB boats are popular with coast guard and law enforcement because they are very stable in all kinds of weather conditions. Being difficult to capsize or sink, RIB’s are very safe. They also are easy to beach, dock and rendezvous with other vessels while being light-weight, having high carrying-capacity and very fuel efficient. Should be good enough to carry two people, our stuff and one sailboard 40 miles. Though I will need to get a board bag to prevent damaging the deck gel-coat and boards non-skid surface.

Obviously, I don't know what the conditions will be like. Typical weather for this spot looks interesting. Being almost in the middle of Lake Erie, it seems there is typically more wind there as compared to the shore. I've been checking periodically, and my unscientific opinion is it seems Pelee might be a bit windier on average than the shore .

We're going to stay at the Wandering Dog (again). This is a super chill B&B on the east shore of Pelee. The nearby beach access is quite good (see below). The house pictured is a private residence (I think), but I understand that the locals are understanding about sharing the beach.

Upon arrival and after clearing customs, my plan is to run the boat close to shore or to beach it to unload everything before docking up at Scudder's Marina, which is about 7 miles to the north. The east side of Pelee seems to have beach while the west side is very rocky. Even the east side has some giant granite boulders, which require a lot of attention whenever boating near the shore. This part of the adventure will require us to exercise caution.

Trip 2 Muskegon State Park: 10/4/2019 thru 10/6/2019 (Date Changed)

My sister's family and my wife and I will be camping at Muskegon State Park campground the weekend of September 20th. I'm not sure what to expect. I've never been to the campground before, but my sister tells me there is a nice beach. The reviews indicate it's a short walk from the beach campsites to Lake Michigan. Typical weather for this time of year looks like I might expect light winds and chilly water. We will see!

I plan to bring my shorty wet-suit. I've read that a neoprene cap can help keep you comfortable in chilly water. I think that would be a small thing that could keep me a little bit more comfortable. Maybe I'll get a Yulex Surf cap or similar and put the theory to a test.

As long as the weather is good enough for the journey, I'm sure we'll be taking these trips. If there's a major storm then maybe the boating trip will be postponed, but otherwise we'll be heading there regardless of the projected windsurfing prospects. Hopefully we find some good sailing!

Send me a message if you think you might want to exchange info and meet up at one of these destinations.

Happy sailing ;-)

The Shop

Why buy? My windsurfing gear is about 20 years old. I got what I could afford at the time. As such that gear is old, heavy and slow. It served me well for years and years. I think it is well overdo to treat myself to a new rig. After all I work hard all year long, it's my cake day and there's a whole bunch of justifications I could make, but that's not the point.

My first thought was to head to Hatteras, rent some gear, try it before I buy it kind of thing. There was a great shop called Wind NC which had impressed me when I vacationed there in the past. Unfortunately, Wind NC moved from Hatteras and is now a online retailer, which is not the buying experience I was looking for. With my all time favorite shop off the table, I decided to investigate shops local to Michigan before exploring more OBX shops. I always intended to invest more time and effort into enjoying the sport in Michigan as opposed to heading south.

While my search revealed a limited set of options viable shops, I was nevertheless very impressed by Sailsport Marine in Traverse City. Scott was super helpful over email and by phone. The shop is dedicated to all kinds of smaller sailing craft and the selection of windsurfing gear was pretty good!

Accommodations

Having found my shop, I then had to figure out where to camp. I decided to try Empire Township Campsite, which seemed like a good location. The place was great, and I can highly recommend it. The picture below shows my tent and hammock among the trees. I really dig the camping thing, and I think it's going to open up a whole bunch of cool sailing locations. ETC was really really nice. It was pleasant enough to hang there all day Saturday when the wind was MIA. I had time to read a book and just relax in the hammock.

The Gear

I ended up getting Bic Techno 185D and a AirX 7.7

This...

Replaces this...

What to do with the old board? Maybe I could give it away. Or maybe a niece or nephew would want to try the sport one day and it could be nice to have it around as it is a completely functional rig. Who knows...

The Conditions?

I had been to Traverse City a few times, but never really explored the regions sailing potential. So I wanted to try a few spots. The launch sites on my radar where

Van's beach

Elberta beach

Somewhere in Ludington?

Somewhere on the Grand Traverse Bays?

Saginaw Bay?

As you can see my radar was not very precise, and I have some willingness to drive for sailing conditions. Luckily, I did not need to leave TC at all. My first day was a light wind day 10 knots or so launching from Greilickville Harbor Park. It is basically an amazing launch site. Public beach access (check), parking close beach (check), big clean bathrooms (check) and convenient location. The sandy beach belied some danger below the surface, and my bare-feet found some big rocks near shore. They were not sharp, so I ended with a little bruise but nothing to worry over. Across the bay there was a Hobie-Cat race going. I got close enough to eyeball a Hobie 16. I could have crossed the bay had it not been for the race. Instead I tacked back to the beach. It was the kind of light and steady day that encouraged me to sail at least two miles. Never a particularly exciting moment, but it was nice to regain some confidence. It had been a few years since i last attempted windsurfing at all.

There was no wind Saturday as mentioned, but Sunday was very windy. First I headed to Betsie Point, and then decided to head south a bit to Elberta. It was lots of fun. Being on my own sailing in Lake Michigan for the first time, I erred on the side of caution. It had been some time since I last windsurfed, and I was determined not to find any trouble. As such I kept it close to shore. There was weather front rolling in from the West, and zero boaters. The wind was blowing onshore, and that gave me a small piece of mind.

There was enough wind that I maybe would have been better off with a smaller sail. 7.7 was bit much to handle at times. I certainly needed the practice. It was fun to beach start and see the board plane from time to time. I was more interested in staying under complete control and heading upwind than to go for speed and attempt jibes. But the new board was easy to sail and occasionally I found the board planing or at least near planing. Playing safe all day was fine, but rather wish I attempted at least one jibe. But darn there was just nobody around. If anything happened it would be up to me to get back to shore. So I wasn't going to take any (additional) unnecessary risks.

Video shows the excellent sailing conditions

Then the weather came just as I got it derigged and loaded on my vehicle.

Conclusion

I'm def going to be hitting up this area again. Hopefully soon. I have a shorty wet suit, which I hope is sufficient for windsurfing in Michigan in the Fall.

The web site is worth a look. It is supported by many pros and others to help promote the sport. It is geared towards getting more instructors out there, but there is a lot of related info as well. It appears to be better supported than US Sailing was (they are also backing this program and forgoing theirs). They are offering a gratis Level 1 rating for those with a US Sailing Instructor rating if you "join" and buy the book they are promoting. Registering is free. The book is about $70 depending on where you order. Already having a US Sailing rating, I went ahead and did sign up and got the book (so I will get my Level 1 rating). It is pretty awesome. It is 477 pages of full color photos and verbiage describing any trick and technique you can imagine and likely many you never knew existed. It gives tips and steps to take to learn moves and tells you what move would use what you previously learned to go on to the next one; progressive teachings. It also covers the basics as well. Check it out.

From our love-sick Long Island friends at www.peconicpuffin.com:

Ladies, are you still searching for that special someone? Consider looking amongst the windsurfers:

1. The ratio of men to women is 4 to 1.
2. They can talk about something besides football.
3. They don’t smell too bad because it’s a good bet they’ve gotten wet recently.
4. They have another interest besides sex.
5. You know they’re rich enough to afford windsurfing equipment.
6. You always get the latest weather report, several times a day.
7. They are capable of commitment, at least to their sport.
8. They have no issues about wearing rubber.
9. You always know where they are, at least when it’s windy.
10. Windsurfers are generally fit, tanned, and have cute butts.

Non-windsurfing men should NOT...repeat NOT...pursue windsurfing women, unless they are prepared to immediately throw themselves into the sport. Otherwise they will soon be surrounded by angry windsurfing men who all seek the great and rare prize: the girlfriend or wife who windsurfs (the editor is so blessed.) To squander such a find on a landlubber is an offense to those of us who sheet in!

There is the opinion held by a small minority that it is a drag to be a man whose significant other windsurfs...you probably have to rig for them, they use your equipment etc. but generally speaking the willingness of such wahines to take windsurfing vacations, to understand why the garage needs to be packed with piles of expensive wet gear etc. outweighs the rigging/sharing concerns. Discussion of such matters is encouraged.

US Windsurfing just put out a new app with launch sites and instant connectivity - and of course Facebook integration. They used some of the site from the map that Dave Dalquist put together, but they still need to add many more Michigan sites. It's available for iPhone and Android, so check it out.

Well, I just got back from a two week vacation on Lake Michigan. I finally have a place to store my gear and I was so looking forward to some sailing on the big Lake. But the gear just sat and sat and sat, waiting for the wind that never happened. So disappointed.

On the bright side . . . I have never seen Lake Michigan so clean and clear. After a few days of calm, the lake settled out and I could see the bottom plain as day in 10' of water. As an added bonus, there was not any of the usual churn of dead algae and seaweed sloshing around close to shore either. It really was amazing. Now if only I could order up some wind. I'm not asking for much. . . .just a steady 15-25mph breeze. Please.

Next year's vacation will not be scheduled in the dog days of August.

I usually don't recommend leaving MI in the summer - it's a beautiful state with great beaches (and no sharks). However, for wind there's always Maui. At 200 lbs, I could not hold onto a 4.7 the last two mornings. Jeannie was on a 2.8, and Dan Katlein sailed a 3.5 all day long, two days in a row! The Trades are just awesome. You wake up any time, have some breakfast, maybe a little exercise and stretching session. By 11am, you can almost assume that the winds will be blowing. For some reason, when the wind meters say 21 mph at home, I'm on a 6.5-6.9 m2 sail. Here, I'm on a 5.4 or maybe smaller. Pretty awesome place if you can't be in Michigan.

If you look carefully (or click to expand), you'll see the tiny windsurfers. No on is on bigger than an 86L board and probably a 4.5 sail.

And after a day of getting beat up on small gear, there's the cocktail hour:

My wife and I just bought a place near Lake Michigan that will eventually be our retirement home. But that is several years out. I have a Mistral Screamer (old style) 103L board there and sails ranging from 4.2 to 6.7m^2. I'm looking to pick up a 7.5m^2 sail and another board in the 118-130L range for lighter wind days. Used gear is plentiful here in the Gorge.

Heading to Michigan in a few weeks for some vacation. Hoping for some wind. I've been spoiled by the Gorge conditions. Over the 4th of July weekend I sailed three straight days in 20-35mph winds and got blown off the water on my 4.2m^2 sail and 90L board on the last day. I needed about a 3.7, which I've never gotten around to acquiring because I just can't shake my midwestern mentality that nobody will ever need a sail THAT small! BTW I weigh in at around 200lb. If you haven't tried the Gorge, you are missing something special. I highly recommend a road trip.

I get this question a lot, so I thought I should put it out there. Does anyone know of a place to rent/borrow windsurfing gear in MI? Two or three people, who will be vacationing in the TC area, want to rent equipment. Can anyone help?

The lack of rental gear certainly is not helping our sport.

When Gregory Page arrived at the beach Tuesday, the sky was a dreary gray, northerly winds flew flags straight and towering waves crashed near shore, stirring up white waters like a Jacuzzi.

It was perfect.

"The wind is really, really strong and the waves are some of the biggest I've seen in 10 years," said Page, 58, of Evanston. "It's really fun out there. I've been sailing 20 years, and this is my favorite place in the world. There's no sharks, no jellyfish. ...

"The problem with windsurfing in Chicago is you don't get a lot of days. In Hawaii, they'll sail 20 days a month, but here you might get 20 days a year."

With strong northeastern winds expected throughout the week, the onset of autumn is providing a week of those rare "epic" days, and Page said he wasn't about to miss out.

So the reconstructive dentist canceled work Tuesday and played hooky with several other members of the Evanston Windsurfing Association, who flocked to Greenwood Street Beach in Evanston for the first tall waves of fall. This is the club's favorite season, when Chicago generally sees giant waves generated by severe storms.

The National Weather Service issued a small craft advisory Tuesday as 40 mph gusts howled along the lakefront and waves swelled up to 11 feet in nearby Wilmette, according to meteorologist Kevin Donofrio. Generally, waves taller than 4 feet can capsize a small boat, Donofrio said. Powerful winds and the highest water levels since 1998 (about a foot above average) also prompted waves to wash onto the lakefront trail bike path from Fullerton to 63rd Street Beach.

"When you mention that we have waves on Lake Michigan to people around the world, they don't believe you," said Bob Bechstein, president of the club. "They're like, 'Well it's a lake. How can you get waves that big?' Well, when you see conditions like this and you see the equipment we break, you see how much power there is."

Bechstein said his nonsurfing friends think he's nuts, and his girlfriend, though worried, just asks that he not go alone.

The group met in the parking lot to discuss the best equipment to use. Most brought at least two boards and four or five sails. On days with high winds, they hoist smaller sails. And to sail faster, they ride a smaller board.

"There's definitely an adrenaline rush when you're getting ready," said Bechstein, who changed into his wetsuit in the parking lot.

"It's kind of gnarly out there today, but once you're used to these conditions it's not that bad. It takes experience to be comfortable in this kind of stuff.

"Ten feet, that's a sizable wave. I'm 5'10" and they're way over my head. When you get out there, some of the swells you're going down are huge troughs. ... It's similar to motocross on a dirt bike."

Last Halloween, members of the Wind Surfing Association headed out on the lake when waves as high as 21.7 feet were recorded at a National Weather Service buoy in the middle of southern Lake Michigan. Some members gathered the courage to hit the water, but others, like Uptown resident Mike Mooney, decided to sit out.

"I drove to the beach with all my equipment in the car, and I chickened out," Mooney said. "They were like mountains."

Though Mooney has been riding for five years, he considers himself a newbie. The experienced keelboat racer turned to windsurfing, and he's been intensely prepping for this year's fall waves.

"The first couple seasons I really struggled," Mooney said. "I ended up doing yoga to better my core to get stronger, and I worked out and that's really helped."

With his board and sail in hand, Bechstein plodded through the water until it reached his navel and then hoisted himself up with the handlebar. The most dangerous part is navigating through the first 200 yards of rough surf.

"Getting through the shore break takes a lot of skill and a lot of guts," Page said. "There've been guys here who've been here five years and never gotten out."

A windsurfer gets "hammered," "slammed" or "spun" when a wave throws him off his board. Regardless of the lingo, it's never fun.

"Once you get caught in that," Bechstein said, "you can't overpower that. When you get big waves, it'll drag you down and toss you around like a rag doll for five minutes."

Bechstein eventually dodges the surf and rides the wind far past the end of the breakwater. Windsurfers can go up to several miles offshore, however, the rule of thumb is simple: Don't go farther than you're willing to swim.

Earlier, Page also shot past the incoming waves to make it about a mile offshore. He circled back to the beach several times, catching a wave almost every 10 feet back to shore.

"It's like being at Great America on a roller coaster except you're in control and you're not tied in or anything," Page said. "The beauty of the water and the moving of the waves, it's kind of like skiing only the moguls are moving and coming at you."

After about 30 minutes on the lake, Page jumped over a wave and landed hard. He slowly rode back in.

"I just broke my board," he said, noting a roughly 3-inch crack in his 15-year-old board. "So, I'm just gonna have to get some new equipment and get back out there."

Page retrieved another board from his car and headed back to the lake.
