Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan

July 3, Empire Beach.
6.0, 84 JP was the setup for today.
From 11:00 - 2:30 sailed in the waves, duckin, jibing and helitacking.
SW swell has been building since Friday as SW winds 15-20 mph have been steady. Completely cloudless day, 85 degrees and 65 degree water.
Two other Euro guys windsurfing, 1 kiter and several surfers.

4th of July at Empire Beach.
Another fine day at Empire Beach, identical to yesterday SW winds 15-20 with nice organized swell.
The Ezzy 6.0 and the JP 84 worked as well as I could make them work. Easy inside ducks down smooth slopes of water. Even doing one clew first cutback accidently. Cool feeling when the nose of the board hits the wave and it pushes it around where you can continue riding the wave.

Session started at noon lasted till 3:30 but winds kept up until sunset.
After 3 days of SW winds the swell was as good as it gets.
One other windsurfer and several surfers with hundreds of beach goers enjoying the Birthday Bash.

Tom,
I gotta check that place out someday. Really looks great. Where do you stay there? What's the drive time from Detroit?
Brian,
Joyce and I have a summer home in the Village of Empire.
Empire is located about 30 miles west of Traverse City, take M-72 from TC until it runs into L. Michigan.
On a good day it's 4.5 - 5 hours drive time from St Clair Shores.
Also in the town of Empire there is a SUP/surf shop so the area is popluar with SUP'ers.
Tom,
Long drive, but looks like a great place.
If you think of it, send me the name of the surf shop.
Sounds and looks great Tom! You got a lot more than us!, although at least we ( mostly me...because I always am the wind dummy and it takes Brian so long to pick a sail) had a great two hours in front of my lakehouse on the Saginaw Bay on Monday( July 5) AM. I started with 7.0 and 102L thinking that it was a long shot that I'd get a ride, and in spite of being SW which is side off, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was totally filled in and 7.0 was way more than I needed ( fortunately 5.5 was already rigged and I was able to just sail in and pop it on!) Held up from 9-11 eventhough there was nothing great in the forecast. Brian finally made it out on 8.0. The swells are great there, really smooth even with bigger gear.
