Michigan Windsurfing

Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan

Metro Beach 9/24/10 A High-Powered Event.

A high number of windsurfers showed up on this high-powered day featuring winds from the SW gusting to 40-45 mph. Summer like conditions, upper seventies with bright sun. Extreme chop with swell tops being sheared off by the wind made it look like smoke on the water. Some uninvited guests called sea potatoes were snagging on fins and not letting go in spite of the high rate of board speed.

At least 20 plus windsurfers appeared through out the first and second shifts. Sailing 3.5s to 5.5s in very gusty conditions. For some it was survival sailing in the high-powered gusts, always looking up wind for the 30 mph lulls, something more controllable.

Overall a good day for all being warm and sunny, normally winds like this occur in November with cold air and cold water temperatures.

Tom,
Is that first attachment data right off the windtalker?
Brian
Yes - that is from the weathertalker at MB.
It stores the data so I can dial into it and download it.
Eventually I plan on putting the data on a web site and do away with the phone line.
Once I do that no more monthly phone charges for the phone line at MB.
I have to have a network/wireless connection at the MB site if that is available I will probably experiment this winter.
That's pretty cool... interesting that there is such a difference in the base and gust winds between the to wind meters. Where is the IW meter compared to the MB windtalker?
The MB talker is located on top of park office and has a clear view of winds from SE and S, SW and W winds will be reported as gusty because of trees blocking some of the wind field. All other directions are blocked from trees and are not an accurate indication of wind speeds.
The IW is actually the ST Clair Bouy report, located in thr middle of LSC.It has an unrestricted view of all wind directions.
Hope that helps...
Thanks Tom. Still seems odd tha the MB registered higher gusts than IW with IW being out in the middle... Just re-read your session post...how did I miss "sea potatoes" on the first read?!! Ha ha! Sea Potatoes- perfect description!
