Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan

Hello,

I've been sailing a Melges 16' Scow for a few years and I figured I'd try out windsurfing. I bought a cheapo beater off CL to start out. The lines REALLY need replaced and the sail needs some work, but I took it out for try yesterday anyways. At the end of the evening I could stand on the board without falling over, I can get the sail most of the way up, but honestly I think I sailed 20 feet over the course of 3 hours. There was a lot of falling down and some time was spent sitting on the learning curve! Ill be out on Cass lake later this week, maybe tonight trying to get some movement!

Arrmon,

It really helps to have the right gear, and also to get lessons or help from capable friends.  I don't know what gear you bought, but often the stuff on Craig's list is pretty dated and too narrow to learn on.  There are a number of people that sail Cass Lake, so don't hesitate to ask.  Everyone pays their dues, but getting off on the right foot helps.

Brian,

I've read all over that buying good gear makes all the difference, but I cannot see  putting $1k into something I may not even like. If I get this old board up and running I'll know if I want to go get something new. I actually don't really know anyone who windsurfs right now, If I see anyone out I'll attempt to sail, splash and flail my way over!

And the gear is definitely dated, but it doesn't have a wooden boom like some of the ones I've seen!

Congrats! As a sit-down sailor you should have an advantage over a complete

newbie. The bad news is that windsurfing can be a lifelong addiction.

Now comes the shameless plug for ABK - this time for a free resource:

I would be happy to help you.  I've been giving windsurfing lessons for 14 years. In 45 minutes you'll be able to sail in both directions and complete very basic jibe turns.  I live in Haslett MI near E. Lansing.  I provide all the gear needed for a successful experience. Call me if you're interested. 517-927-9498
