Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan

looking for a lesson or two and equipment purchase advice

hello, i'm looking to learn to windsurf. its cold and i need a new hobby.

I am located in Portage, MI and am about an hour from Lake Michigan. So far I haven't found anyone or anywhere to go to for a windsurfing lesson.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

I am looking for used gear, i think, suitable for a guy that is 5'10" and 200 pounds, though that changes from 185-210 depending on ambition.  I am 40 years old, a snowboarder and fly a powered paragliding trike. I used to jog, up to and including marathons, but i've since seen the light. the light said to stop running, so i listened.

If anyone wants to teach me or convince me to buy a racing board with a ginormous sail, i probably would. i'm easily impressionable.

hit me up if you are interested in teaching or offering advice.  I really, really do not want to buy a strictly beginner bloated whale of a board, I fully intend to reach an intermediate level and want a board that i can use forever pretty much. The idea of running in high winds on lake michigan rollers greatly interests me, but i'm not all that naturally gifted in such matters. I can barely jump on a snowboard and i have no positional awareness or clue at all when i'm in said air...

Mahalo!

And you want advice?  The google group link below is more or less defunct but still up.  It is a solid goldmine of all sorts of windsurfing advice, good, bad and absurd enough to make good reading in the post christmas blues . https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rec.windsurfing

Just search on a few words like 'best board' or 'newbie'

So if you are a risk taker I say, dive in!   It is a crazy learning curve but it can all be as fun as when you finally shoot down and then safely out from that monster slope past the breakwall.  My own daring advice?  Don't rush and don't wait to start stretching and working those calves and quads and hand caluses.  You will need them to practice to best advantage after a good lesson ...
