Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan

During a recent hearing test, the audiologist asked me what I thought was an unusual question: "Do you do a lot of open-water swimming?"  "Not intentionally," I replied, "although I am an avid windsurfer."  The audiologist then revealed that I have small, but noticeable exostoses in my ear canals.  I was completely unaware.  This condition is commonly known as "surfer's ear" due to its association with cold-weather surfing.  Apparently it is benign, and in my case, minor.  Prevention requires protecting the ear canals from cold water and wind.  I already routinely wear a neoprene hoodie whenever temperatures are low.  Armed with this new knowledge, I may try inserting foam hearing protection into my ears as well.

I've heard of this and tried earplugs once.  I felt that they affected my balance, but that could be me.
