Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan
Here is just a word about speed sailing!
For your information Not all GPS Tracking devises are made equal. Garmin forerunner/foretrex are ok recreational tracking devises, but the only ones accepted as really accurate are the 15 satellite tracking Locosys-GT series. These are as far as I know as of this date the only ones accepted on the official GPS speedsurfing site from the Neitherlands, which is a world wide list of official speeds. http://www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=rankings&Year=...
If your GPS will download to a computer you can send the session (recorded on a cookie on your computer, or he SD card) to Craig Bergh email: cbergh@iw.net that runs the Midwest Speed Quest in Worhttngton Minnesota http://www.midwestspeedquest.com/
A few years ago (2007) Annabel and I had the pleasure of traveling to Worthington MN to participate in the Speed Quest. We met Craig and a lot of wonerfull windsurfers vying for the top speed. In talking to Craig we found that he is the officail speed keeper for all of North America and has been for the last seven years. All speeds to be deemed official must be ligitimized by him.
He went on to explain that although the top speed showing on your GPS may show a cerain figure that once he runs it with his programs such as Google Earth, etc, the speed may be significantly lower than the actual reading, in other words the gps do glitch very often.
He also mentioned the fact that he has on occasion caught people trying to cheat using various methods, ie), boats, jet ski's, even one guy that was in his car. The programs will automatically eliminate impossible accelerations so as to make cheating very difficult.
I would like to thank Craig and Pam for sharing their hospitality with us for the week we were there and providing a very informative stay and lesson on GPS readings.
In closing I would like to say if your gps registers 40 knots don't get too excited! If you really belive it do yoursef a favour and send it to Craig and have it ligitimized and posted. Thanks Don
