Keep Windsurfing as an Olympic Discipline

I just got back from Hatteras to see that the 2016 Olympic Committee really screwed up.  There are so many people that have given so much time and money to train and prepare for the Olympics.  Gear has been developed.  Training centers and programs are in place.  It's really a shame to remove windsurfing.  It's not too late.  Please check out this site and sign the petition:…

Meet Steve Bodner, USA 4

For the second installment our Get to Know More Than Sail Size series, Michigan Windsurfing’s Will Splashtack sneaked into the city by the bay to interview Steve Bodner, USA 4.  Steve is another Michigan/Ohio-made windsurfer who has definitely made his ‘mark’.  If you followed the recent Lord of the Wind Showdown or the La Ventana Classic, then you’ll already be aware of some of Steve’s most recent accomplishments.  If…

Thanks for the welcome message.

I used to sail long time ago (last sailed in 1997) at Stoney creek and Orchard lake.   I am planning to get back to Windsurfing and introduce my son (19) and daughter (16) to this wonderful sport.   Was glad to see this website for michigan windsurfing community.   I am looking for equipment (sold mine in 97) and feel bad that I missed the swap meet held at Dodge Park earlier this month.

Brian, Thanks for the welcome--I stumbled onto MW from a link on Windsurfing Int'l mag site. Nice to connect with this community. We have a small group of sailors living along the shore between the old Breakers-on-the-Bay and Port Crescent campground. I'm here almost full time. Hope to meet you in person some day. Do I understand that you are from Lake Orion? That has been our home for over 30 years.

Regards,

Steve

Hello Brian

Did my comment make it back to you? I hope you are having some good spring wind.

Thank you, Dirk

Thanks for the welcome.  Lake Geneva is a small obscure lake in Northern Michigan (near Onaway).   Not particularly great windsurfing, but that's where I seem to be most.

Do you happen to know if there will be a Windsurfing swap meet anywhere in Michigan this Spring?

Former?
Once a Michigander, always a Michigander. I grew up right on Lake Michigan about 1 mile north of the Holland pier. I taught windsurfing for the Surf Shop in Holland. I started windsurfing in 1980.
I am thrilled there is a Michigan windsurfing group.
Thank you, Dirk

The page stopped flickering...yeah! Now I need to see if my picture will download. It didn't work the other day. Thanks, Susan

Thanks Brian! Have you ever tried iceboating? Something to take the place of windsurfing during the winter. Ice on the lake this year is not good enough yet. Maybe we will have an early Spring.

Why does this web page flicker up & down?

Yep - u got it. Thanks. After inaugurating his board in NJ & MA visiting family, Ben has it out at home for the 1st time right now. Nice wind on Walnut Lake!

Yeah, I'm thinking of what I may want to get rid of at the next swap meet, to make my load lighter when I move. My biggest board is a mistral explosion 130 L that's been sittin in my garage not used in 10 years in primo condition; that's a keeper. My smallest board is a 85 L Real Wind and that I may get to use in MI as can use up to a 5.8 sail on it. Have a 100 L real wind too I'm keeping. Wave sails I bought used from northwave, so great loss there. First thing to buy in MI will be a 6.4.  The new sails are much more efficient now so don't mind getting some new stuff. I plan on traveling in MI to where it's windy and not wait for the wind to come to me. I learned to windsurf when I lived in Kalamazoo 25 years ago and have sailed lake mi. Am moving back to be near family again AND will bring wind!
