Windsurfing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Michigan
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the subject of big board small sail vs small sail and big board combo.
I just finished up my last sailing session (I think) for this year at Rondeau Bay.
I find, particularly as the weather cools off, I bend toward the small sail big board combo for safety, as the water and air temps cool below the 50 deg F range. The reason being that it is hard to be relaxed sailing as I did Monday, alone, and thinking if something breaks or goes wrong at least with the big board combination I can easily get back to shore without spending (hopefully) a lot of time in the water.
The small board big sail combo works nicely when the air and water temps are more forgiving and a small board is a lot more maneuverable and jumpable, provided the wind is steady.
The big board small sail combo also tends to work better in gusty conditions, as it is not much fun slogging along or worse spending time in the water waiting for the next gust.
Again if you misjudge the winds strength the big board combo will get you back to shore to re rig.
