The Passing of a Windsurfer

It is with great sadness and humility that I post the death of a dear friend and member of the Lake Lansing sailing community. Thomasz Kociuba 53 of Okemos Michigan passed away Monday Feb. 2nd 2011 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Tom took up windsurfing in his mid 40’s and quickly became a regular at Lake Lansing. He also made regular trips to Higgins Lake, Lake Michigan and The Gorge.
Tom was a native of Poland and had a wonderful accent that was accentuated by his animated descriptions of wind and wave conditions. He always had a smile on his face and after sailing would radiate the stoke only a windsurfer knows. Humble and giving; he always had a kind word, an apple or a bag of walnuts to offer during a break or after a session.
There will be a memorial service Monday Feb. 7th in East Lansing. When the lake thaws we will have a service and paddle-out at Lake Lansing.
