I got two of the things I wished for in my last session report.  Most importantly, there was no hail to contend with today!  Also, the wind on Lake Lansing was much steadier, WSW at around 15…Continue

I planed in the straps today, so I’m calling it opening day.  Conditions on Lake Lansing were far from ideal, gusting from 10 to 30 knots and shifting at will between W and NW.  Still, it was…Continue

Surprise Memorial Day weekend 4.1 session.

The weather has been beautiful this Memorial Day weekend.  On Friday and Saturday it was 70 degrees with a 5-10 knot ESE breeze.  That’s not enough for me to plane.  Instead, I spent each afternoon sailing (non-planing) at the Lake Lansing swimming beach (closed for swimming due to Covid-19), trying to hone basic sail- and board- handling skills.  This weekend’s goals were all varieties of helicopter tacks (and its close cousin, the upwind 360), e.g. clew-first, switch-stance, fin-first,…See More

Bizzarro weather

In my last session report, I bragged that it was so warm that I sailed in wetsuit and summer booties.  I thought Spring had finally sprung.  Since then, however, we’ve has snow in Lansing!  Although it “warmed up” to the 40s today, I found myself back in full cold-weather attire: dry suit, hood, mittens, etc. for the gusty NW on Lake Lansing.  Did I mention gusty?  At times, I was hanging on to my 5.1 for dear life.  Other times, I was bobbing like a bath toy.  At least there was no hail...See More

Two out of three ain’t bad

I got two of the things I wished for in my last session report.  Most importantly, there was no hail to contend with today!  Also, the wind on Lake Lansing was much steadier, WSW at around 15 knots or so (more than enough to consistently plane on a 6.3 sail and 100 liter board).  However, even though it was sunny, I still felt the need to stick with the dry suit.  On the plus side, the dry suit kept me toasty warm all session.    While packing up, I was approached by a kite surfer who…See More

I planed in the straps today, so I’m calling it opening day.  Conditions on Lake Lansing were far from ideal, gusting from 10 to 30 knots and shifting at will between W and NW.  Still, it was good to knock the rust off, and prove that I still remember how to rig, water start, tack, jibe, and manage to return to the launch under extreme conditions.  I cannot call it a fun day, more like paying my dues.     My body was toasty in my Bare semi-dry suit, but my exposed face was subject, at…See More

Hey Larry,  saw your comment about moving to GR.  I am glad you want to help my cause.  It is a daunting one.  I am stirring up some interest.  All ability levels.  From never sailed to advanced.  I am a teacher and am almost done.  My sailing season starts now.  I did get to sail in Turks and Caicos over spring break but haven't been able to get out here yet.  I sent a friend request so you can message me.  Let's get together to sail this summer.

Hi Larry,

Great meeting you yesterday.

Thx also for the links about the Scooter and South Bay, Long Island.

A unique and classy ice yacht for sure.

I hope Michigan will prove to be as good a venue for your sailing as Long Island.

When the wind is up, I will be at Cass Lake working on my skills and strength.

Many years past, we used to sail on nearby Orchard Lake but I haven't seen anyone there in my drivebys.

Lets's stay in touch.

Regards,

Barely a photographer! I do ride a lot though-mostly on Lake Erie! One of the guys I ride with is into photography & anytime he gets gassed he pulls his cam out, hence we get a lot of pics.

Larry, Molly, You'll both want to sign up for the Yahoo MIWindsurf email group.

send an email to: miwindsurf-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

There is discussion of upcoming wind events, occasional session reporting,

launch discussions, etc. The best feature by far is Millard's upcoming wind

analysis. You don't want to miss that.

Molly: You don't want to launch at most of these places until you've got a reliable water start:

Larry, you'll want to launch at Kettle Point in Ontario on a NNW or N wind for waves, or possibly St. Joseph.

At Marysville if it is a strong South (closest thing around to the Gorge),

At Lexington if there's an NNE or NE.

At Sterling if it is a SE.

Caseville works on a SW.

Maumee works on a West

There are numerous places much farther north too, but I'm not too

familiar with them.  After work you'll have to make Lake Lansing work for you.

Haha - I'm new too! I just started windsurfing last summer. I'm afraid I won't be much help. Maybe we could get a group together to go windsurfing sometime this summer, though??

I've surfed Higgins Lake a couple times and Mullet Lake - both are nice places for Windsurfing: usually windy, grassy rigging areas, shallow. That's all I got. :)
