Hi Randy, I'm very interested in sailing Gun Lake sometime this summer. I have not sailed their before but I have heard lots of good things. I will PM you my phone number so we can get in touch.
Torch is usually a day trip for me. There is a nice little campground in eastport near the boat launch that would be great for inexpensive overnight stays. My most frequent sail spots in the U.p. are Sherman Park on the st. marys river and Trout lake township park. There are so many awesome lakes and places to sail, I try to sail a new spot every summer. Higgins Lake sounds beautiful would love to sail there sometime. You being a teacher sounds like the perfect gig for a michigan windsurfer having summers off!! :)
Hey Randy, Don't hesitate to call if you go to Hamlin. We have a second home a 1/4 mile from the launch that is getting the facelift. I live in Allendale but spend lots of time in Ludington hoping for that windy big lake forecast. Got a trailer full of equipment (the quiver) that usually stays up north. Be looking for you this spring...Earl S
Hello Randy, Heading up to Hamlin lake this morning. Don't plan on sailing, even though foot is healed and the wind was good yesterday, plus almost 60 degrees. This will hopefully be a short winter. If you ever plan on sailing Hamlin, give me a call (cell 616 635 8571), I'm up there for sailing mostly on weekends. Looking foward to some spring sailing. I usually sail at the end of Duneview Rd. There is a public launch there (You may already know where it is) that is being upgraded for boaters. Hope upgrade does not increase boat traffic there. Always enjoy meeting another wind junkie. Earl S
Hi Randy. Thank you for the welcome! Eastport boat launch on Torch Lake is a nice spot on any South wind. Probably some nice spots on south end of lake also. If you ever want to sail it, give me a shout. Always love to meet other Windsurfers :)
Hey Randy, We will have to get together and sail sometime! Give me a call if you hear of any good wind coming in. My cell # is 616 402 3772. My dad and I are always looking for some people around the area to sail with!
I usually go to Austin Lake, it is close by and big enough to have pretty constant wind.
Hi Randy
Randy
My brother, a friend and I have access to lake MI at the end of Fruitvale road and that is where we typical sail when the weather and temp are right. We have sailed White lake a few times when the wind picks up out of the west. Gun Lake is another destination for us when the big lake temps are chilly. I recently met Rob Dykstra about the same time I found this web site. Crazy coincidence!
We will have to get in touch this spring.
Tim
Hi Randy,
Thanks for the email, yes, I am speaking of Whitehall/ Montague White Lake. My parents have had a place on the lake for 38+ years. They have since moved up there and live there full time so we (wife and 2 kids) are there very often in the summer (while living in Grand Rapids).
I learned to sail and board out of the yacht club. I used the race both butterfly's and MC's... One year they offered a windsurf clinic and that is where i fell in love with windsurfing. I learned on a whaler (not the boat whaler). Do you remember them? I think they went out of business 1-2 years after they opened.
I currently do not surf (have not in about 5 years), but really want to get back into it. I would consider myself an advance beginner to beginner intermediate. I started thinking about this early this summer, but was very disappointed to find out there is no local place to get equipment. Where in West Michigan sells windsurfer's? Have you lived there all your life?
Any help you can give me on equipment would be appreciated, I would love to sail with you this summer.
Thanks-Rob
Thanks for the tip. I'll definately try it next time!
